May 1 is a national public holiday in Portugal. Banks, government offices and many businesses close, while transportation may follow a holiday timetable. Restaurants and tourist attractions can remain open, but hours vary.
In Lisbon, Porto and other cities, Labor Day may include demonstrations, union events or political gatherings. For travelers, the main practical issue is not the event itself but the potential effect on opening hours and local transportation.
Festa das Cruzes in Barcelos
At the beginning of May, Barcelos hosts the Festa das Cruzes, one of the major traditional pilgrimages of the Minho region. Visit Portugal describes it as the first great annual romaria of Alto Minho.
The most important fixed date is May 3, when the main procession honoring Senhor da Cruz takes place. The wider festivities typically include flower carpets, folk dancing, marching groups, fireworks, music and the large Feira das Cruzes.

IndieLisboa International Film Festival
IndieLisboa is one of Lisbon’s major annual film events, dedicated to independent and emerging cinema. The official festival has already announced its 24th edition for April 29 through May 9, 2027.
The program typically includes international and Portuguese competitions, short and feature films, experimental work, children’s programming and film-industry events. Screenings take place at multiple venues across Lisbon.
This is a good event for travelers who want a cultural reason to spend several evenings in Lisbon without restructuring the entire daytime itinerary. Visit museums, neighborhoods and monuments during the day, then choose screenings in the evening.
May 12–13: Fátima Anniversary Pilgrimage
May 12 and 13 are among the most important annual dates at the Sanctuary of Fátima. The Sanctuary’s current calendar already lists the 2027 anniversary pilgrimage for both days.
The pilgrimage commemorates the reported Marian apparitions of May 1917 and draws large numbers of pilgrims from Portugal and abroad. The program normally includes prayer, rosary, candlelight processions and Masses, with the largest concentrations of visitors around the evening of May 12 and the morning of May 13.
If May 12–13 is central to your trip, reserve accommodation well ahead of time. Fátima has substantial lodging capacity, but pilgrimage periods create exceptional demand and road traffic.
Queima das Fitas in Coimbra
Queima das Fitas—the “Burning of the Ribbons”—is Coimbra’s most famous student celebration and one of Portugal’s strongest examples of living academic tradition. It is associated with graduating students, university ritual, concerts, parades and the emotional end of the academic cycle.
The University of Coimbra describes May as one of the city’s most active periods because of Queima das Fitas. In 2026 the event ran from May 22–30. The 2027 dates were not yet officially published when this guide was reviewed, so travelers should verify the current edition rather than reuse the previous year’s dates.

Madeira Flower Festival
The Madeira Flower Festival is one of Portugal’s most visually distinctive spring events. Visit Madeira has already confirmed the 2027 festival for April 29 through May 30.
The official program centers on flowers, gardens, renewal and spring. Events include floral installations in Funchal, the Wall of Hope, flower-group performances, the major Flower Parade, concerts, classic cars and other cultural programming.

The parade is the festival’s signature spectacle. Most festival events are free, but seated places for the parade require paid tickets.
Wall of Hope
Children traditionally place flowers on the symbolic Wall of Hope, one of the event’s best-known community traditions.
Madeira in May is especially appealing because the festival combines naturally with gardens, levada walks, Funchal and scenic drives. Weather remains variable in the mountains, so check trail conditions independently from city forecasts.
May Religious Traditions in the Azores
May is also an important religious month in the Azores. One of the archipelago’s most significant devotional traditions is the Festas do Senhor Santo Cristo dos Milagres in Ponta Delgada, São Miguel.
The Municipality of Ponta Delgada describes the celebration as the city’s largest and most important socio-religious event and one of the defining traditions of the Azores. The main festivities generally occupy several days in May and bring major processions, religious ceremonies, decorations and large crowds to Campo de São Francisco and central Ponta Delgada.

May is one of the strongest overall months for Portugal travel. Days are longer, mainland temperatures are usually comfortable for sightseeing and the intense summer heat has not yet become routine.

- Porto and northern Portugal: increasingly mild and green, though rain is still more likely than in the south.
