Portugal's motorways are modern, but historic centers can mean narrow streets, limited parking and more complicated toll or access rules. A practical route often begins the rental when leaving a major city and returns it before a longer city stay. Smaller vehicles are also easier to manage unless passenger or luggage needs require more space.
