9-Day Private Portugal Highlights Tour: Lisbon, Alentejo, Douro & Porto is a 9-day, 8-night private journey through some of mainland Portugal’s most distinctive cities, wine regions and historic landscapes. Beginning and ending in Lisbon, the itinerary combines Sintra and the Lisbon and Tagus Valley coast with the Alentejo, Serra da Estrela and Central Portugal, the Douro wine region and Minho, Porto and Coimbra.

Travel in a private deluxe Mercedes sedan or minivan with an English-speaking Tourism-Driver while staying in selected premium hotels and historic Pousadas. The route features UNESCO World Heritage cities, medieval villages, pilgrimage sites, wine estates, palaces and monasteries, with included entrance fees to the cultural and historic sites listed in the itinerary, lunches during full-day touring, and a traditional Fado dinner and show on your final evening in Lisbon.

Day-by-Day Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Lisbon

Arrive at Lisbon Airport, where you will be met and transferred by private deluxe sedan or minivan to your hotel. Check in and enjoy the remainder of the day at your own pace.

Overnight in Lisbon.

Day 2 - Estoril, Cascais, Cabo da Roca, Sintra & Lisbon

Meet your Tourism-Driver after breakfast and travel along the Lisbon coast toward Estoril and Cascais. Continue to Cabo da Roca, the westernmost point of continental Europe, before heading into the Sintra Mountains.

Enjoy lunch with wine in Sintra and visit Pena Palace, the colorful 19th-century palace set high above the town. Return to Lisbon for sightseeing that includes major landmarks in Belém such as Jerónimos Monastery, Belém Tower and the Monument to the Discoveries.

Overnight in Lisbon at Pestana Palace or a similar hotel.

Day 3 - Évora, Marvão, Castelo de Vide & Belmonte

Travel east from Lisbon into the Alentejo, where cork oaks, vineyards, agricultural landscapes and fortified towns characterize the region. Visit Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its Roman, medieval and later Portuguese heritage.

Continue toward the Spanish border through Marvão and Castelo de Vide before heading north to Belmonte, a historic village near the Serra da Estrela. Continue to your confirmed hotel in the Serra da Estrela or Viseu area for the night.

Overnight in Serra da Estrela or Viseu.

Day 4 - Viseu, Lamego, Douro Valley, Vila Real & Amarante

Continue toward the Douro wine region, with a stop in Lamego to see the sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios. Enter the Douro Valley for a private winery experience, including a visit to a wine estate, wine tasting and lunch.

Cross the Douro River near Peso da Régua and continue to Vila Real for a visit to Casa de Mateus, an 18th-century Baroque manor house. Finish the day in Amarante, set along the Tâmega River, or continue to Amares depending on the confirmed hotel arrangement.

Overnight in Amarante or Amares.

Day 5 - Braga, Ponte de Lima & Guimarães

Continue through northern Portugal to Braga and visit Bom Jesus do Monte, known for its monumental Baroque stairway and hilltop setting. Travel onward to Ponte de Lima, one of the Minho region’s historic towns and an area associated with Vinho Verde wine.

End the day in Guimarães, a city closely connected with the origins of the Portuguese kingdom. Enjoy time in the historic center before settling into your heritage hotel.

Overnight in Guimarães at Pousada de Guimarães or a similar property.

Day 6 - Guimarães & Porto

Begin with additional sightseeing in Guimarães, including its medieval center, castle area and Palace of the Dukes of Braganza. Continue to Porto and explore the UNESCO-listed historic center along the Douro River.

Visit landmarks such as the Church of São Francisco and the Stock Exchange Palace, then cross to Vila Nova de Gaia for a private Port wine lodge visit and tasting. Finish the afternoon with a cruise on the Douro River.

Overnight in Porto at Pousada Palácio do Freixo or a similar hotel.

Day 7 - Porto & Coimbra

Enjoy some independent time in Porto before traveling south to Coimbra, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. Explore the historic university area and the old city, including architectural landmarks associated with centuries of Portuguese academic, religious and royal history.

Overnight in Coimbra at Quinta das Lágrimas or a similar hotel.

Day 8 - Fátima, Batalha, Alcobaça, Óbidos & Lisbon

Travel south from Coimbra to Fátima, one of the world’s best-known Catholic pilgrimage destinations. Continue to Batalha Monastery and Alcobaça Monastery, two of Portugal’s major historic monastic landmarks.

Before returning to Lisbon, visit Óbidos, a medieval walled village known for its whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets. Back in Lisbon, celebrate the final evening with an included traditional Fado dinner and show.

Overnight in Lisbon at Pestana Palace or a similar hotel.

Day 9 - Depart Lisbon

After breakfast and hotel check-out, transfer by private deluxe sedan or minivan to Lisbon Airport for your departure.

  • This is a private touring program. Vehicle type varies by party size; Mercedes E-Class sedan for the two-person package and a Mercedes V-Class or Vito minivan for the four-person package.
  • The included Tourism-Driver provides light historical and cultural information about the destinations visited but does not provide guiding services inside monuments.
  • An official Guide-Driver, who can provide historical and cultural interpretation inside monuments, is available for an additional supplement on request.
  • Some Pousadas may require a minimum two-night stay during certain periods and may be replaced by comparable hotels when necessary.
  • City taxes are not included and are payable directly to the hotels.

Booking & Policies

Booking Your Land-Only Vacation

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $350 per person is required to confirm and hold your reservation.
  • Vacation departure dates, itineraries and prices are subject to change until your reservation is confirmed.
  • Final payment is due 55 days before departure.

Booking Your Vacation With Air

  • This vacation does not include an airfare option. We can hold your land reservation while you arrange your flights. Once you confirm your air itinerary, we can proceed with collecting the required deposit and confirming the land portion of your vacation.

Cancellation Policy

  • The $350 per person deposit is non-refundable.
  • For cancellations made 55 days or more before arrival, the cancellation charge is $350 per person.
  • For cancellations made 54 days or fewer before arrival, no-shows and unused services, no refund will be provided.
  • A cancellation is considered valid only after we have received the request and confirmed the cancellation to you.

Refund Fees

  • Any credit-card processing fee assessed when a payment is made will be deducted from any refunded amount. This also applies to deposits refunded because requested services are unavailable for the requested travel dates.

Booking Changes

  • A fee of $35 per person, per transaction, will be charged for revisions or changes made to a reservation after the booking has been confirmed.
