Algarve is a region stretching across the southern coast of Portugal. As you travel, you’ll notice two distinct areas. In the north, there are vast orchards and vibrant foliage, which create a lively and beautiful landscape. Along the southern coast, red cliffs separate golden beaches into enclaves and grottoes, allowing for an ideal beach-going experience.

The temperature is quite fair here. In the summer it ranges from 14°C to 24°C (57°F to 75°F), while in the winter it rarely drops below 12°C (54°F). At times, the high in the winter can almost feel like summer. In fact, the Algarve boasts 3,300 hours of sunshine per year, more than almost any other destination in Europe.

Cities

The cities of Algarve all have their own personalities and attractions to offer. These are just a few examples of the beautiful and diverse towns that offer rich culture, historical points of interest, and picturesque beaches.

Faro, the capital of the region, offers many historical sites of interest, including cathedrals and museums. As a working city, it tends to be best suited for day trips and excursions rather than multi-day vacations.

Albufeira, a short trip to the west of Faro, offers an exciting nightlife as well as excellent cuisine. This stunning city is especially popular with foreigners and young people. Here, you can embark on boat tours, lounge on the beach, or try out one of the world’s only “water-touch” bungee jumps.

Lagos features superb beaches within walking distance of the city center. Here, be sure to experience the vibrant history and festive nightlife. You can also see some of the most stunning beach caves by taking a boat tour from Lagos.

Sagres is located in the extreme southwest of continental Europe. The city will forever be linked to the nautical school first developed by Prince Henry the Navigator.

Another history-packed city, Silves dates back to the 8th century, during the height of the Moorish period. It is a must-stop point for those wanting to understand the history of the Algarve.

Tavira is a quaint and lovely fishing village, with great beaches and an attractive downtown. This charming town is full of Moorish influence, relaxed atmosphere, and delicious foods. An interesting stop here is the Cemetery of Anchors, which serves as a monument to the local fishing industry.

Golfer’s Paradise

Algarve is also a major destination for golf enthusiasts looking for some of the best golf courses in Europe. Some of the best hotels in Portugal are located near Algarve’s fantastic golf courses, and every year golfers from all around the world come to hit the links.

Golf first came to the region in 1966, at the Penina Resort. However, the region is now home to 43 different courses. Golfers from all over the world travel to the Algarve to experience the perfect weather, beautiful courses, and not-too-shabby surroundings. With views of the sparkling ocean or the lush countryside, it’s easy to see why golfers love playing here!
