5 Reasons To Go To Portugal On Your Next Break

by Damien Troy

For some of us, our days are filled with shivering over the harsh weathers of winter, watching our breath endlessly float into the air and our hands slowly freeze into a numb state. In times like this, the best thing you can do is dream of your next sunny, action-packed summer holiday – and why not Portugal? With massively popular European countries such as Spain and Greece dominating the summer holiday scene, it can be easy to forget about Portugal’s beauty, but it’s all there in full glory! Once you’ve completed your EHIC card renewal and booked your tickets for an outstanding hotel in Lisbon, you’re all good to go! Here’s why a trip to Portugal could be the best thing you decide to do next summer.

Your Pound Will Go Further

Ahhh, Brexit. Is there ever a time when we don’t hear that 6-letter word ringing in our ears? Well, whilst the thought of the UK leaving the EU might make you want to pull your hair out, the effects are almost non-existent when travelling to Portugal! Of course, this country does use the euro as its dominating currency, however visiting the country and purchasing its goods has remained reasonably cheap for British tourists, so you can stretch out your currency a little further and enjoy the exquisite food and drink offered here (more on that later!).

The Rich History

Everybody knows the history behind Greece, but do they know the history behind Portuguese cities like Lisbon? The chances are that they don’t, but you’re really missing out here! We won’t spoil too much for you, but for a little background knowledge, Portugal was born in 1143 due to a battle that erupted between a mother and son! There are ample tourist attractions dotted around Portugal, all completely spilling with rich history that you would never have learnt in your standard history class as a child.

Buzzing Nightlife

Granted, a lot of you may prefer to get a good night’s sleep and feel regenerated for a long day of sight-seeing tomorrow. For the party animals amongst you though, Portugal has unbelievable nightlife that you certainly wouldn’t be able to experience elsewhere. No matter whether you’re staying in Lisbon or Porto, there will be endless clubs open for you to lose your mind in – although not quite how you’d expect. The nightlife in Portugal often revolves around Afro-house, giving the word clubbing a completely new meaning. But come on, it could be fun!

Food & Wine

Who here hasn’t enjoyed a classic ‘cheeky’ Nando’s? Personally, I feel there is nothing better than tucking into some peri-peri chips and a butterfly chicken, but did you actually know that Nando’s is a Portuguese restaurant? Well, there’s more where that came from, as Portugal is loved for its iconic and authentic cuisine, including the famous salted fish and pastel de natas. It doesn’t end there though, as you can sample some of the finest wine known to man – Port Wine.

Safety

In a world overwhelmed with terrorism and extremism, it can be more than stressful to venture off abroad into countries that are sadly becoming victims one by one. But, by visiting Portugal, you are in one of the safest countries currently out there. According to the World Economic Forum, Portugal is the tenth safest country in the world, with not only a low threat of terrorism, but also an impressively low crime rate. So, no matter whether you’re travelling solo, or you’ve planned a fun family holiday out in Porto, you can be rest assured that it will be one to remember for all the right reasons.

If these 5 points haven’t persuaded you to visit Portugal, you must be crazy! It’s perfect for everyone, whether you want to soak up the sun on their famous beaches (temperatures can reach 33oC in July!), or absorb the breath-taking history that this country holds – it’s well worth the trip.
