Driving the Heart of Portugal is a 9-day, 8-night self-drive vacation that begins and ends in Lisbon and follows a scenic route through the Alentejo, Serra da Estrela and the Beiras, the Douro region, Minho, Porto, Central Portugal and the Costa de Prata (Silver Coast). Along the way, discover historic cities, fortified hilltop villages, vineyard landscapes, Roman heritage, pilgrimage sites, UNESCO-listed monuments and Portugal’s Atlantic coast.

Designed for travelers who want to explore Portugal independently while following a carefully planned route, this itinerary combines major cultural destinations with smaller towns and scenic driving regions. Highlights include Évora, Marvão, Castelo de Vide, Belmonte, Guarda, Viseu, Lamego, Guimarães, Braga, Porto, Aveiro, Coimbra, Fátima, Nazaré and Óbidos, with overnight stays in Lisbon, Marvão, the Guarda or Serra da Estrela area, Amarante or Guimarães, Porto and Coimbra.

Itinerary

Day 1 - Arrive in Lisbon

Arrive at Lisbon Airport, collect your rental car and drive to your hotel in the Portuguese capital. Settle in and enjoy the remainder of the day at your own pace before beginning your self-drive journey through Portugal. Overnight in Lisbon.

Day 2 - Lisbon to Évora, Estremoz & Marvão

Lisbon to Évora, Estremoz & Marvão [256 km; approximately 159 miles]

After breakfast, leave Lisbon and cross the Vasco da Gama Bridge into the Alentejo region, where open plains, olive groves, vineyards, cork oaks and whitewashed towns define the landscape. Your first major stop is Évora, a UNESCO World Heritage city known for its Roman, medieval and Renaissance heritage and the distinctive Chapel of Bones.

Continue to Estremoz, a hilltop town in a region long associated with marble quarrying, before driving north toward Marvão. Set high above the surrounding countryside near the Spanish border, this fortified village offers one of the most dramatic settings of the journey. Overnight in Marvão.

Day 3 - Marvão to Castelo de Vide, Sortelha, Belmonte & Guarda

Marvão to Castelo de Vide, Sortelha, Belmonte & Guarda [221 km; approximately 137 miles]

Travel north through the mountain landscapes of the Serra da Estrela and the historic interior of Portugal. Stop in Castelo de Vide to explore its whitewashed streets and old Jewish Quarter, then continue to the fortified village of Sortelha, where stone walls and elevated viewpoints overlook the surrounding countryside.

In Belmonte, discover a town noted for its Jewish heritage and its association with Portuguese explorer Pedro Álvares Cabral. Continue to Guarda, one of the principal historic cities of Portugal’s mountainous interior. Overnight in Guarda.

Day 4 - Guarda to Viseu, Lamego, Vila Real & Amarante

Guarda to Viseu, Lamego, Vila Real & Amarante [270 km; approximately 168 miles]

Depart Guarda and continue through the Beira Alta and Central Portugal region to Viseu, a historic city surrounded by the Dão wine-growing area. From Viseu, drive to Lamego and visit the pilgrimage sanctuary of Nossa Senhora dos Remédios.

Cross the Douro River at Peso da Régua and continue to Vila Real, where the 18th-century Casa de Mateus is a major architectural highlight. End the day in Amarante, set along the Tâmega River, or continue to Guimarães, depending on your hotel arrangement. Overnight in Amarante or Guimarães.

Day 5 - Guimarães, Braga & Viana do Castelo to Porto

Guimarães to Braga, Viana do Castelo & Porto [161 km; approximately 100 miles]

Begin the day in Guimarães, often called the cradle of Portugal because of its important role in the formation of the Portuguese kingdom. Continue through the Minho region to Braga, where historic religious landmarks include the Archbishop’s Palace and nearby Bom Jesus do Monte.

You may also visit Ponte de Lima before continuing to the Atlantic coast at Viana do Castelo. Take time to explore the historic center on foot, then drive south to Porto. Overnight in Porto.

Day 6 - Full Day in Porto & Vila Nova de Gaia

Leave the car parked and spend the day exploring Porto. Walk through the historic center, explore the riverfront and discover neighborhoods overlooking the Douro River.

Across the river, Vila Nova de Gaia is home to the Port wine lodges where many of the region’s wines are aged and bottled. Spend time enjoying Porto’s architecture, food and wine traditions before returning to your hotel for a second overnight in Porto.

Day 7 - Porto to Aveiro, Buçaco Forest & Coimbra

Porto to Aveiro, Buçaco Forest & Coimbra [160 km; approximately 99 miles]

Drive south from Porto toward Aveiro, a coastal city known for its canals and maritime traditions. Continue inland to Buçaco Forest, where walking trails wind through a historic wooded landscape created and cared for by monks over centuries. At its center stands the distinctive Buçaco Palace, once associated with a convent and later used as a royal hunting lodge.

Continue to Coimbra, home to one of Europe’s oldest universities. Explore the historic hilltop university area, including the Joanine Library, along with Coimbra’s old streets, churches and architectural landmarks. Overnight in Coimbra.

Day 8 - Coimbra to Conímbriga, Fátima, Batalha, Alcobaça, Nazaré, Óbidos & Lisbon

Coimbra to Conímbriga, Fátima, Batalha, Alcobaça, Nazaré, Óbidos & Lisbon [269 km; approximately 167 miles]

Leave Coimbra and head south toward the Lisbon region, beginning with a stop at Conímbriga, one of Portugal’s most important Roman archaeological sites. Continue to Fátima, one of the world’s best-known Catholic pilgrimage destinations.

From Fátima, visit the Monastery of Batalha and the Monastery of Alcobaça, both recognized as UNESCO World Heritage sites. Continue west to Nazaré on the Costa de Prata (Silver Coast), known for its broad Atlantic beach, fishing traditions and dramatic ocean setting.

Your final stop is Óbidos, a picturesque walled village of whitewashed houses and cobblestone streets. Return to Lisbon for your final overnight.

Day 9 - Depart Lisbon or Extend Your Portugal Vacation

After breakfast and hotel check-out, make your way to Lisbon Airport for your return flight. If you would like to continue exploring Portugal, contact us to arrange additional nights in Lisbon or another extension to your trip.

Booking & Policies

Booking Your Land-Only Vacation

  • A non-refundable, non-transferable deposit of $350 per person is required to confirm and hold your reservation.
  • Vacation departure dates, itineraries and prices are subject to change until your reservation is confirmed.
  • Final payment is due 55 days before departure.

Booking Your Vacation With Air

  • This vacation does not include an airfare option. We can hold your land reservation while you arrange your flights. Once you confirm your air itinerary, we can proceed with collecting the required deposit and confirming the land portion of your vacation.

Cancellation Policy

  • The $350 per person deposit is non-refundable.
  • For cancellations made 55 days or more before arrival, the cancellation charge is $350 per person.
  • For cancellations made 54 days or fewer before arrival, no-shows and unused services, no refund will be provided.
  • A cancellation is considered valid only after we have received the request and confirmed the cancellation to you.

Refund Fees

  • Any credit-card processing fee assessed when a payment is made will be deducted from any refunded amount. This also applies to deposits refunded because requested services are unavailable for the requested travel dates.

Booking Changes
