Looking for a sunny Portugal vacation without making every night a luxury-hotel splurge? The Algarve offers a wide range of places to stay, from small city hotels and riverside guesthouses to self-catering apartments and eco-friendly camping. With beaches, historic towns, coastal scenery and good road and rail connections, southern Portugal can work especially well for travelers who want to combine relaxation with independent exploring.

Faro is the Algarve’s main air gateway, and the region is compact enough to explore from several different bases. Rather than staying in only one resort, consider combining two or more areas of the coast. If you would rather have the hotels and transportation coordinated for you, browse our Portugal vacation packages or use the Portugal Vacation Planner to build a trip around your dates and budget.
1. Hotel Sol Algarve by Kavia, Faro
For travelers who want a practical base in the regional capital, Hotel Sol Algarve by Kavia is centrally located in Faro, close to the train station, bus connections, restaurants and the marina. Its location makes it convenient for travelers arriving without a car as well as those planning to continue elsewhere in southern Portugal.
Faro deserves more than an airport stop. The historic center, marina and old walled quarter are easy to explore on foot, while the nearby Ria Formosa opens the door to boat trips, nature and barrier-island beaches. See our Faro travel guide for ideas on what to see and how to use the city as a base in the eastern Algarve.
2. Salema Eco Camp, near Praia da Salema

Formerly known as Quinta dos Carriços, Salema Eco Camp is a good option for travelers who prefer a more outdoors-focused Algarve stay. Set near the fishing village and beach of Salema, it offers camping as well as other accommodation options in a greener, quieter setting than the Algarve’s larger resort areas.
This part of the western Algarve is well suited to travelers who want beaches, coastal scenery and access to smaller communities between Lagos and Sagres. A car gives you the greatest flexibility, although the area can also be combined with time in Lagos. Our Lagos travel guide includes Salema and other nearby western Algarve destinations worth exploring.
3. Residencial Marés, Tavira
Residencial Marés occupies an appealing riverside location in the heart of Tavira. The property has 22 rooms, and its central setting puts the historic center, restaurants and riverfront within easy walking distance. Some rooms look toward the Gilão River, and the location is particularly convenient for travelers who want to experience Tavira without depending on a car every day.

Tavira is one of the Algarve’s most attractive historic towns, with churches, castle remains, traditional streets and easy access to the Ria Formosa. Boats and ferries connect the mainland with the long sandy beaches on the barrier islands, while regional trains make it possible to explore other eastern Algarve towns. Read our complete Tavira travel guide for beaches, sightseeing, transportation and suggested day trips.
4. Studio 17 by Atlantichotels, Portimão
Studio 17 by Atlantichotels is a self-catering option in Portimão, with studios and apartments that include kitchen facilities. It can be a useful choice for longer stays or for travelers who like the flexibility of preparing some of their own meals. The property also has an outdoor swimming pool and is within easy reach of central Portimão and Praia da Rocha.
Portimão makes a convenient base for exploring the central and western Algarve. Praia da Rocha is known for its broad sandy beach and dramatic rock formations, while nearby destinations such as Lagos, Silves, Alvor and the coast toward Sagres are easy additions to a wider itinerary. Choosing the Right Algarve Base
There is no single best place to stay in the Algarve. Faro and Tavira work especially well for eastern Algarve sightseeing and travelers using public transportation, while Salema and the western coast suit those who prefer smaller communities, beaches and a slower pace. Portimão provides easy access to Praia da Rocha and a central position for exploring more of the coast.
Accommodation prices change considerably by season, so compare your travel dates rather than assuming that one property will always be the least expensive.
